Gold, black and white interiors inspiration

We stepped into Natalia’s home in Liverpool, and were in awe of her chic interiors style. She mixes mid-century furniture with vintage finds and modern accessories, and uses a monochrome colour palette with metallic accents. Natalia lives with her husband Ant, their two daughters, Scarlett and Liberty, and their dog Coco in a 4 bedroom home in Liverpool. We sat down with Natalia to talk about her home styling, inspiration, and lifestyle.

Says Natalia: I think my interiors style is all about mixing and matching the things that I love, whether it’s an antique, a mid-century piece of furniture or something very modern such as the Starkey chandelier. My husband calls it "shabby chic"!

I try to keep the colour palette neutral. Our lives are chaotic, so it’s important that home is relaxed and calm. I find that white or grey walls provide the perfect backdrop for all the items we have accrued over the years.

When we bought the house there were 4 small rooms on the ground floor, none of which were conducive to family living. The kitchen was at the back of the house and was small and pokey. After knocking down a wall and going against all the advice we were given we finally created enough space for an open plan kitchen.

The kitchen has always been the heart of my home and we knew that this was going to be the most important space for us to create. We had a bench seat custom-made with storage underneath, so that has helped with the complete lack of storage this house has.

The kitchen table is my Nana’s, and we found the table legs in a dark corner in the basement of Pilgrim Antiques in Liverpool. They weren’t for sale but I knew they would be perfect. Ant knocked up a frame to attach the legs to and now the table works perfectly with the booth seating.

Everything happens at that table. We love to entertain and enjoy having people in the house, whether it’s planned or an impromptu visit. The open plan kitchen allows visitors to become immediately involved in everything, whether it’s cooking, playing with the kids, or more often than not, drinking!

We wanted a light fitting that made a statement in the kitchen. The fitting also needed to provide as much light as possible, because we wanted to avoid using spotlights. The Starkey chandelier ticked all the boxes. People love it when they come in.

At Christmas time we host all my old school friends and their families for a catch up. Our kids outnumber us and are ever increasing so it’s a challenge trying to fit everyone in. Somehow we manage to cram everyone around our table to feast on something yummy cooked up by Ant. He does all the cooking!

Other than the kitchen, my favourite room in the house is the new plywood room we’ve created at the back. It’ll eventually be a playroom for Scarlett and Liberty with a little workstation for Ant and me. At the moment it has a huge daybed in it and has become the perfect little hideaway on those cold, wet days we keep having.

I also have the Ogilvy task lamp in that room, and I can angle it to point at the desk or the daybed. Reading is a luxury with a young family but when there’s time I love to cosy up with a book on the daybed. Our dream is to build our own house so I’m always flicking through architecture and interiors books looking for inspiration.

In our bathroom, I wanted two sinks and when I looked at the more traditional bathroom furniture the units they were either uninspiring or too expensive. Then I saw the Rankin unit and thought it would be perfect. It has great storage, looks industrial and perfectly fits two sinks.

Shop the Rankin storage unit.

We love Liverpool because it’s not too big, it has beautiful parks, galleries and museums, and it’s a city like no other when it comes to wit, humour and charm. Our favourite places to go are Bold Street Coffee for coffee with the kids, Maray for a fab dinner out with friends, and The Alchemist for some amazing after dinner cocktails.

Natalie's home is beautiful. I'm in the process of doing up my place in Liverpool but have loads of problems with tradesmen. Would be grateful if I could find out who Natalia use for her project. Thanks!

I love Natalia's colour palette, it is elegant without being too fussy and especially the open plan kitchen. Using the Rankin unit in the bathroom is inspiring and looks great with it's industrial edge. A gorgeous house!

Love this house interior it is tastefully chic and homely. I am a Liverpudlian but live 260 miles away and visit the City at least twice a year and will definitely visit the Made shop and other venues as mentioned.

Really admire the way in which the eclectic pieces all work together. Monochrome schemes sometimes can look cold but these homeowners have really pulled the look off. It is both sophisticated and cosy. Just one concern...has the plywood been coated with a fire retardant? I ask only because I know plywood burns very quickly.
