Entertaining in a small outdoor space? Here’s how.

Summer’s finally here, so it’s time to prep your outside for those garden gatherings. Struggling for space? We asked interior designer and garden guru Sofie Vertongen for her tips on how to make the most out of a small plot. So pour an Aperol, and get scrolling.

1. First up, create different zones for lounging and dining using plants, outdoor rugs and garden furniture to break up the space. You should also position the latter based on how the sun moves – this way you’ll always get the best spot.

2. When it comes to your dining setup, opt for something compact like Lyra and then group a few small side tables around it – perfect for when you have friends over and want to serve some sharing dishes. Choose tableware in the same colour palette to really make your food pop.

3. Weather not on your side? To make that outdoor brunch feel extra cosy, add cushions and blankets. Good outdoor lighting is also a must – try dotting some candles around your space.

4. If you're short on square metres but want to fill your garden with greenery, think up rather than out by opting for a vertical wall planter – it’ll create that jungle feeling you’re after. Another top tip is to pick high planters or pots on stands – this’ll create depth and give your plants extra space to grow.

5. Finally, music is a simple way to instantly create good vibes, even when it’s pouring with rain (check out our MADE playlist). In summer, the first thing I do when coming home is open up the sliding doors to my patio, put music on and pour myself a glass of wine. The perfect way to end a busy day!
