This is our game plan for 2021 and beyond. We’re tackling four key areas where we can make the most change.
“We’re committed to doing the right thing for our planet. By making better business choices we can minimise our social and environmental impact.”
As a furniture retailer, many of our products are crafted from wood. We’re committed to ensuring we use timber sourced from responsibly managed forests. Why? To avoid contributing to deforestation. How? By tracing our timber back to forest level, selecting well managed routes/sources, as well as using recycled wood where possible.
2021 goal: 60% of our timber will come from more sustainable sources, which includes traceable timber, recycled timber or from sources certified as being responsibly managed.
2025 goal: 100% of our timber will come from more sustainable sources, which includes traceable timber, recycled timber or from sources certified as being responsibly managed.
Our choice of materials matters. And we’re on a mission to ensure that two of our key textiles – cotton and polyester – create less environmental impact.
2021 goal: 100% of the polyester velvet we use will be from recycled sources. As for our remaining polyester range, 15% will be from recycled sources. And when it comes to cotton, 25% will come from more sustainable sources (certified organic or recycled).
2025 goal: 100% sustainably sourced key materials.
There’s a delicate balance between protecting our products in transit to prevent damage (which creates waste) and over-packaging (which also creates waste). From listening to your feedback, you feel the same. So our plan is to eliminate all unnecessary plastic from our packaging, and ensure that what we do use is recycled and recyclable.
2021 goal: Reduce total packaging by 20%, and reduce the amount of polystyrene and plastic we use as part of our packaging by 25%.
2025 goal: 100% recycled or recyclable packaging.*
*This is an ambitious goal, but an important one. We’re going to be transparent on our journey and will keep you updated with our progress along the way.

What’s included in MADE’s sustainable materials commitments?
Our materials commitments were scoped out with key categories in mind – ones where we can make the most impact. These materials are core to the construction of the products from these categories.
Timber target: covers our upholstery and furniture ranges
Cotton target: covers the outer fabrics used in our upholstery and textile ranges
Polyester velvet target: covers the outer fabric used in our upholstery and textiles ranges. The second polyester target covers the outer fabric used in our upholstery and textile ranges
Why only polyester, cotton and timber?
This is where we can have the biggest impact right now, but we’ll continue to explore other areas this year. We’re looking at natural materials as well as our stuffings and fillings. Plus, we’re looking at how we can source more responsible animal-derived materials.
